Top Things to Do in Vietnam

1.Spend the night on Halong Bay: This UNESCO world heritage site offers stunning limestone karst scenery. Hire a private junk and sleep on the water, then spend the next day sea kayaking into caves and visiting local fishing villages.

2. Cruise the Mekong Delta: Along these quiet waterways, you can see the timeless image of farmers working the land and fishermen with their nets. Stop by floating markets for a taste of authentic local commerce.

3. Get a suit made in Hoi An: This beachside town is the tailoring capital of Vietnam for a reason. You’ll find more choices of fabric and amazingly quick (and English-speaking) service. There are a number of shops in the Old Quarter, but most people recommend Yaly, A Dong and Thu Thuy.

4. Visit ethnic minorities in Sapa: Glimpse the lives of the ethnic minorities who live in mountain villages near Sapa. If you’re lucky, you’ll be invited in for tea.
5. Experience a day in the life of a farmer: Curious what it’s like to be a rice farmer? Educational farms like the Hoi An Eco Tour in Cam Thanh village let tourists don conical hats and boots and spend a day working in the rice fields.

6. Taste pho: You can’t visit Vietnam without trying the country’s signature dish, clear beef broth with fresh rice noodles and herbs. In the north, the flavor is simple, with only heaps of spring onions and cilantro, while in the south the broth features star anise and toppings include bean sprouts and hoisin sauce.

7. Take a cooking class: Learn to recreate all the delicious Vietnamese food you’re eating. Most classes, like those offered by the Hanoi Cooking Centre and Saigon Cooking Class, include a market tour, where a chef will decipher the mysterious offerings of the local wet market before you head into the kitchen.

8: Hit the beach: Vietnam’s sandy shores might not be as famous as those of neighboring Thailand, but they’re just as pleasant. Visit Nha Trang for the full tourist experience, China Beach in Hoi An/Danang for fresh seafood and Phu Quoc for its beautiful national park.

9. Try street food: Sit down at a stand selling pho in the morning, bun cha at lunch or xoi late at night. Most vendors don’t speak English, but you can easily order by pointing and smiling.

10. Drive a motorbike: It sounds crazy, especially during rush hour in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. But you can find plenty of quiet places to experience the joy of the open road. Try the countryside around Nha Trang or Hoi An. If you’re unsure of yourself, hire a local guide - and don’t forget to wear a helmet!
