Hoi An Travel Guide

The peaceful seaside town of Hoi An was a bustling trading port from the 15th-19th centuries. Today, the old town has been preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, keeping the narrow lanes and Chinese-style shophouses free from modern development. Despite being one of the most heavily touristed places in Vietnam, Hoi An still has a unique charm.

Many families still living in the old wooden houses have opened them up for tours. The family that owns Phung Hung House has lived in the two-story building for eight generations. At Tan Ky House, you can see how Chinese and Japanese design influenced local architecture.

Assembly halls offer another example of Chinese heritage. Built in the 1800s, places like the Cantonese Assembly Hall and the Hoi kien (Fujian) Meeting Hall gave Chinese residents of Hoi An a place to socialize. Today, they’ve been kept largely intact.

Near the center of town, the Japanese Covered Bridge is one of Hoi An’s most iconic sights. It was built in the 1600s by Japanese residents before they were forced to return to Japan under imperial policy. Strolling across the bridge affords a peaceful view of the river.

Today, Hoi An is famous for its tailors. The narrow alleys are filled with shops where you can buy customized clothing - particularly suits - and shoes. Prices are often inflated due to the influx of tourists, but bargaining is generally acceptable. It helps to speak a little Vietnamese, although many salespeople are well versed in English.

After a day of shopping and tourism, relax on Cua Dai Beach. The white sand stretches all the way to Danang. More adventurous travelers can partake in activities like paragliding, while others can relax by the sparkling water and sample local seafood specialties from the many small restaurants that dot the beach.
